Light vs. Dark: The Tale of Two Roasts
Share
Coffee folks love to argue about roast. Some swear by that bright, lively flavor that hits first thing in the morning. Others won’t touch a cup unless it’s dark, rich, and strong enough to wake the dead. Truth is, both have their place. It just depends on what kind of fire you’re chasing.
Light Roast
This one’s the early riser. The lighter you roast a bean, the more you taste where it came from like the soil, the air, the altitude. Light roasts keep more of that natural flavor, and you’ll catch notes of fruit, flowers, or citrus if you pay attention. They also hold a bit more caffeine since they haven’t spent as long in the heat.
Light roast coffee shines when you want clarity. It’s bright, clean, and easy to drink black. Folks who like the pure taste of coffee without the heaviness usually land here.
Dark Roast
Now this one’s for the night owls. Dark roast beans spend more time in the fire, and that heat caramelizes the sugars and oils inside. What you get is a bold, smoky flavor with a smooth, heavy body. It’s the kind of cup that sits deep in your chest and reminds you to get moving.
Dark roasts lose a little caffeine in the process, but they make up for it in attitude. It’s a comforting cup: strong, steady, and unbothered.
Finding Your Roast
There’s no wrong answer here. It all depends on what kind of morning you’re having. If you’re chasing something sharp that wakes your mind, go light. If you’re after something grounded that sets your feet, go dark.
At Howl & Bean, we roast both ways because life needs balance. Some mornings call for a bright start. Others call for a slow burn. Either way, you’ll find the same heart and fire in every bag that comes out of our roaster.
So what’ll it be?
